catching up
Apr. 2nd, 2020 02:35 pm( Legacies 2x16 )
What with the forced isolation, between online classes and online work, my roommate and I are watching tons and tons of tv. I’ve tried reading to but I can’t focus for long enough at the moment, which sucks -so there it is Carmilla’s novella, likely the shortest among my favorite stories, waiting for me to finish my re-read xD.
Usually tv shows are what I’m unable to properly get into: I can’t follow week-by-week episodes unless I’m really into it, and I don’t have as much time to binge-watch as I used to; and when I do, I don’t feel capable of investing in new characters and usually just end up re-watching old faves. Or at best, watching adaptations/spin offs, where I’m at least partially invested (i.e. I started The Vampire Diaries because I was already in love with Legacies; I watched the Harley Quinn animated show because, well).
On that vein, we finally got around watching the fourth, and likely last, season of Veronica Mars.
( spoilers )We also watched Watchmen, yet another story I’m familiar with xD. I thought Angela was a superb protagonist, and I enjoyed all the ingenious storytelling devices they used during the season. My other favorites were Lady Trieu, Will, Wade, and of course, good ol’ Laurie; I really liked what they did with her here. I liked Cal, too -his matter-of-fact speech to the kids about how there’s no afterlife and death is final endeared me to the guy xD
We even watched a completely new thing! She’s wanted to watch Prodigal Son for a while; I’m not one for procedurals but this one sounded interesting enough, so I indulged her. The procedural part is alright enough, but I’m mostly interested in the Whitly family’s drama. My favorites are Jessica and Martin, both of whom are a DELIGHT, but I love Ainsley and Malcolm too. There was a post on tumblr recently about how great it is that the romances the show focuses on most are all about Jessica, the mother character/middle aged woman, and I can’t agree more. And
( major spoiler from last episode )Next show in line is probably Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries. Which I guess technically counts as a procedural, but one a lot prettier and more stylish than the average, at least xD (procedurals are usually so drab…). I have high hopes for this one, so I hope I like it ^^
( Legacies 2x15 )
So. How's everyone doing these days? I spend my days studying for class, writing and reading and catching up with tv and films a lot less than I'd like, and eagerly awaiting for my turn to do any of the chores that'll get me out of the house xDD. Are there any friend or prompt memes around tumblr you recommend? Or music, books, videos... basically, I'm bored, I have the shortest attention span in existence, and I need ALL the distractions. For each one I'll offer one back, even :P
These last days I re-read Doomquest and its sequels too (I always end up going through old favorites instead of finding new stuff when I have free time. Alas).
( Read more... )And I started watching the new animated Harley Quinn show.
( Read more... )And to finish this off, here’s a post by @tozka linking to a bunch of free stuff you can access to read or watch during these days, in case your as bored as I am, stuck at home. Enjoy!
FINALLY CAUGHT UP ON COMICS (and a meme)
Mar. 14th, 2020 10:59 pm( Wonder Woman #753, Decorum #1, Avengers #32, Jessica Jones: Blind Spot #5, Nebula #2 )
And a meme I borrowed from @used_songs: Name a TV show you like, starting with each letter of the alphabet.
A- Addams Family, The (1960)
B- Buffy the Vampire Slayer
C- Charmed
D- Dollhouse
E- I’ve struggled with this one and I can only remember those that are in my “shows to watch” list LOL: Emerald City, Empire, Euphoria, The Exorcist, The Expanse
F- From Dusk Till Dawn
G- Gargoyles (it pains me to choose between this, Galavant, Game of Thrones, and Golden Girls. JSYK)
H- House M.D.
I- Iron Man: Armored Adventures
J- Justice League (I tried to think of another one as to not put two DC shows -Young Justice DESERVES a mention for s1 alone-, but couldn't come up with anything)
K- Like above, I could only come up with those I want to watch but haven’t: Killing Eve, Killjoys, Kings, Krypton. Okay, and Kim Possible. I didn’t watch it consistently but Kim/Shego was a very important part of my childhood xDD
L- Legacies
M- Misfits (never finished but for the most part I loved s1-2 SO MUCH)
N- Nikita
O- Orange is the New Black (which I should finish, one of these days…)
P- Phineas & Ferb (it was so goddamn weird. There’s new content since the last time I saw it and my brain can’t process that LOL).
Q- Couldn’t come up with one either. I’ve always wanted to try Quantum Leap?
R- Reign
S- Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
T- Terminator: the Sarah Connor Chronicles
U- Uhh… I want to watch The Umbrella Academy at some point. I’m 95% sure I’m gonna like it.
V- Vampire Diaries, The ETA: how could I forget Veronica Mars!! I adore that show. I haven't watched the latest season yet (I'm spoiled about the main things, but given the things I love about the show, I gather my opinion is going to differ from that of the majority). Sorry TVD, I've liked your 1st season a lot and I'm really into your canon, but I don't know you enough yet to put you above VMars xD
W- Wonder Woman
X- Xena: Warrior Princess
Y- Young Justice
Z- A friend insists I should watch Z Nation and to be fair it looks more appealing than most zombie content…
-I didn’t pull off most of my fic writing goals, alas. I did write a bunch of stuff for the three sentences ficathon:
- Agent Carter – Dottie/Peggy + the worst dance partner; ~40 words, for @sholio.
- DCU – Diana + time. ~100 words, for @goodbyebird.
- Disney – Beauty and the Beast + courtship/arguments via book reviews; ~110 words, for @syrena_of_the_lake.
- GoT – Sansa + no queen has clean hands; ~200 words, for @rthstewart & Bronn + do not forget your place; ~90 words, for @kingstoken.
- Gargoyles – Elisa/Goliath + wind beneath my wings; ~50 words, for @syrena_of_the_lake.
- The Sarah Connor Chronicles – Jesse/Sarah + wired; 110 words, for @goodbyebird.
- The Good Place – Vicky + attempt 666; ~70 words, for @smallredboy & Michael + life on Earth, ~130 words, for @astrogirl.
- The Witcher – Geralt/Renfri + brushing Geralt's hair; ~100 words, for @nasimwrites.
I think you can still leave comments, so hey, if anyone wants to leave me something in my remaining prompts… they’re Giuletta/Tony (Marvel 616) + metaphorical armor and Alastor/Charlie (Hazbin Hotel) + deals with the devil. Wink wink, nudge nudge, etc.
-In January I wrote two ficlets too, for a prompt meme, and I remembered I forgot to post about it over here. Oops. They’re Red, a Carmilla/Laura (Carmilla, the novella) Snow White AU (~600 words, M) for @lee_bella, and The Spoils, a Cersei/Sansa (GOT) The Hunger Games AU (~900 words, E) for @kingstoken.
-I took a leap of faith and singed up for the Once Upon a Fic Exchange. Lucky for me, I’m actually excited about one of the prompts I got; I hope my recipient likes it too, but for now it’s nice to know I’ll have fun writing it. The deadline is in May, which gives me plenty of time too. And I can’t wait to see my gift! If anyone’s curious, I put in requests for Yde et Olive, The Snow Queen, Persephone & Hades, and One Thousand and One Nights.
-I’m still trying to valiantly catch up on my Wednesday comics reading. These are my thoughts on the second-to-last week, which means now I’m only one (1) week behind. I can work with that.
( Wonder Woman #752 )( 2020 Machine Man #1, 2020 Force Works #1, Avengers #31, Jessica Jones: Blind Spot #4, Star #1-2, Tarot #1-3 )
"Hello John. Goodbye John."
Feb. 28th, 2020 10:27 pmI re-watched The Handmaiden with some friends today. The sex scenes remain awkward as hell LOL, but I love the rest. It really works for me as an adaptation of Fingersmith -it’s a really good book, and one I’d like to re-read one of these days (as well as picking up other Sarah Waters novels), but I’ve always thought the last part was super convoluted and The Handmaiden does away with that (and I like that here both women are in on it, instead of shutting up and willing to let the other get committed). It’s an incredibly beautiful film, too. And Min-hee Kim does an amazing job as Hideko, I should check out the rest of her filmography.
We watched Portrait of a Lady on Fire next, because I guess this is what happens when you’re on a group made out of only queer women LOL. I can see why parallels gifsets of the two films have crossed my dash, because there’s a lot to choose from (it constantly reminded me of Titanic too). It’s a terribly slow film, so be warned if that’s not your thing. It’s not really mine, so even if it’s a well-made and well-acted film, I definitely prefer The Handmaiden. I enjoyed the Eurydice and Orpheus references the most, because I’m a nerd.
I finished the Harley Quinn & Poison Ivy mini-series along the week (six issues total). Neither the writing nor the art is anything out of the ordinary, but the final twist gives me a few plot bunnies. BTW, there's an entire page for a FOREHEAD KISS and I can't shake the feeling it was supposed to be a kiss-kiss that got thwarted in the last stages. A full page for just a forehead kiss seems like an overkill.
Aaaaand yesterday I finished the first season of The Vampire Diaries!
However, I decided I’m going to wait for at least a week before I get started with s2. In the meantime I’ll watch or read something shorter and less time consuming -if I binge-watch something for a long time I get tired of it. I’ve also encountered this TVD meme and I thought I’ll write some meta (and maybe make some graphics) following it, or at least an abridged version of it; ten characters seems a lot so I’ll cap it at only five, for example. I found this other one for favorite characters too, and when Legacies’ season is over I’ll do the same, but for the twins (both, because I can’t choose between them).
"I'm the good brother."
Feb. 27th, 2020 01:10 amToday I got to DC’s last week comics and one more episode from The Vampire Diaries.
( DCeased: The Unkillables #1, Justice League #41, Nightwing #69, Wonder Woman: Dead Earth #2 )( TVD 1x19 )
"Mulder was right in the end."
Feb. 20th, 2020 11:23 pmI’m behind in my weekly perusing & judgement of new comics. There’s just too many! At least until I sort them out and decide the few I want to keep up with. The good (?) news is that I find a lot of them extremely annoying -it’s like every. single. issue. must end in a plot-twist/cliffhanger. It becomes tiresome at some point, okay? Anyway, here are my thoughts on last week’s DC stuff.
( Batman: Pennyworth RIP #1, Catwoman #20, Harley Quinn & Poison Ivy #6, Harley Quinn & the Birds of Prey #1, Supergirl #39, Superman #20, Superman: Heroes #1 )And I watched a few more TVD episodes.
( TVD 1x13-1x15 )Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey
Feb. 12th, 2020 11:23 pmWe went to the theatres to watch Harley’s film today. It was tons of fun, the soundtrack is great, and Harley shined as a character. I want to rewatch it ASAP. If you’re going expecting comics’ characterization for the other women you should shake them off before going in and just enjoy the film (the rest are alright, but Cass is Cass in name only). I feel like a hypocrite given that advice, given how I can get when I feel MY favorite characters aren’t well characterized, but it’s the only advice I have xD
And if I’m honest, I feel comic adaptations don’t fall on the same spectrum as your average ones, as they don’t try to adapt specific stories but recreate characters and shape stories around them. They’re basically AUs, as opposed to a sequence of comic runs or a traditional book-to-film adaptation. But that’s neither here nor there LOL.
This is a story about control. My control.
Feb. 9th, 2020 01:23 am-I wanted to watch a few more Oscar nominated films but instead took a detour and watched Hustlers. Definitely a good choice. It's good, entertaining, the soundtrack is AMAZING (the title of the post is the first thing you hear in the film, and it sets the tone wonderfully), and while not perfect, it handles the topic well, IMO. I loved Destiny and Ramona's relationship, and I liked the journalist. She worked really well as an audience POV character, at least for my POV xD. As little as she appears in comparison, some of my favorite moments in the film (outside anything Destiny/Ramona ofc) were hers, how she reacted to and got invested in the protagonists; like when she pauses before accepting the drink Destiny offers her, or when she's shown to be just as taken and flustered by Ramona as everyone else was.
-I've concluded I need to watch more stuff with Constance Wu. I loved her here and in Crazy Rich Asians, but I have no intention of watching her sitcom (with very few exceptions I tend to get unspeakably bored them). Any recs? I want to watch her episode in Dimension 404 (it's wacky sci-fi and wlw, so).
-I keep hearing good things about Harley & the BOP film, so maybe tomorrow I can drag my roommate to watch it with me.
-I just saw these pannels from an old Batman comic
where Bruce tries to woo Selina with... creepy stalagmite/stalactite metaphors?
Because one of them looks like a cat?? It's hilarious and I thought it should be shared. Old school comics are something else xDD
-Some Arrow spoilers from the finale crossed my dash. I haven’t watched that show (or any of the others; well, except for a little bit of Flash's season three, because I'm vulnerable to certain tropes LOL. Or that dreamscape episode with dream!Laurel because well. Dream Laurel, plus tropes) since they killed Earth-1 Laurel, the only character I gave a damn about by the time I left. Apparently
-I watched TVD’s second episode.
WEDNESDAY COMICS X2
Feb. 6th, 2020 01:44 am( Action Comics #1019, Detective Comics Annual #3, Justice League Dark #19, Captain America #18, Hawkeye: Freefall #2, Jessica Jones: Blindspot #2 )
( DC's Crimes of Passion #1, Justice League #40, Lois Lane #8, Daredevil #17, Doctor Doom #5, Magnificent Ms. Marvel #12, Miles Morales: Spiderman #15, Strikeforce #6 )
Finally, I started this Hill House comic, Daphne Byrne. It's only two issues long so far, and it seemed up my alley. It’s a gothic horror comic with plenty of the staples of the genre. Daphne is a teen girl who recently lost her father; she’s weird and morbid and moody. Her mother sees a fake medium, Daphne is starting to have mysterious visions and manifesting some magical abilities (right in time with her first menstruation, ofc), a dark spirit is following her around in dreams and nudging her towards the dark… The atmosphere is on point and I’m really enjoying it. If it sounds like your type of thing, I'd recommend it.
snowflake challenge #7 and #8
Jan. 28th, 2020 10:45 amI wanted to post at least one fic before I got to this challenge LOL, but my WIPs are not collaborating with me right now, and I'd like to catch up with the challenge, thank you very much (I have a rare free day, so I'm going to try to do as many of these as possible. Sorry in advance for spamming your reading pages).
Since it wasn't possible, I'll link to a couple of posts I posted in @monthlysupergo for this month's challenge: icons. In my case, Wonder Woman icons (misc, and from this week's anthology issue). I made my dreamwidth icons too, and I'm quite proud of them -visual arts of any kind are NOT my thing, but these all turned pretty well, if I say so myself. And since I have so very little output in terms of fanworks, here are the icons or headers I use in other platforms too :)
As for other people's fanworks: one of my favorite things in fandom, one that never fails to impress me, is fanart. Maybe it's because I struggle to draw a straight line with a ruler, I don't know. But there are so many gorgeous pieces out there, and at least 70% of why I made myself a tumblr account was to reblog them and have them stored somewhere. Some of my favorite ones:
- DC
- BatCat fanart: Selina with a cat and a jewerly collection and Batman in her mirror (I know some people complain about comics and other canons returning Selina to a jewerly thief from time to time but... can't relate, I love it. It's The Chase!), vampire Bruce in a mascarade, and this adorable drawing of Bruce presenting himself as a gift to Selina, naked minus the cowl and an strategically placed bow xD
- Diana as a boxer.
- Harley and Ivy kissing on pride parade in the famous V-J Day pose.
- Jason Todd as a very frustrated Batman, and as a priest in Flashpoint. And as Red Hood in various canons and uniforms.
- And this amazing fanart from the TV show Gotham of teen Bruce with an ominous Batman shadow.
- Disney:
- From The Little Mermaid, have Ariel as Ursula's apprentice and this gorgeous homage drawing to the film.
- And this chilling Tangled fanart.
- Vaggie from Hazbin Hotel as an avenging angel.
- Mrs. Coulter from His Dark Materials sitting on a throne.
- These Jennifer's Body drawings that are both cute and unsettling, somehow.
- Marvel
- Superior Iron Man being hot.
- Tony with a sword and shoulder armor, because.
- Tony and Pepper fighting back to back in Endgame.
- Rule 63 Winteriron Sleeping Beauty AU, with bonus armor porn.
And to finsih it off, I wanted to rec two fics I read recently (and finally commented on): O Rose thou art sick, an Aurora/Maleficent what-if for the Disney film (mind the warnings); and itches in the front, a short BatCat smut fic with some domme Selina.
last week's comics
Jan. 27th, 2020 09:53 pmMore comics I tried out just to see if something sticks.
( Amazing Spider-Man #38, Black Panther #20, Captain Marvel #14, Guardians of the Galaxy #1 )
I wanted to read Birds of Prey Giant #1 because it had a Gail Simone story, but I couldn’t get my hands on it. In other comic news, I started reading the Arkham Knight comics, because the Brujay Week in February has an Arkhamverse prompt and I wanted to see if it inspired me. So far, too little Jason on it, but it’s a quick read. And it's nice to see Oracle Barbara there at least.
wonder woman 750
Jan. 23rd, 2020 02:06 amBasically Diana goes around showing her female villains she loves them and inspires people to step up, two of my favorite things about Wonder Woman (along with the gratuitous bondage, which also makes a few appearances!). The art was gorgeous, overall, and it's made me regret that I already posted a bunch of Diana's icons here LOL.

weekend wrap up
Jan. 19th, 2020 09:23 pmI don’t know what it says about me that I often turn to re-watches and rereads instead of getting into new things (is it the comfort of the old favorites? Is it because investing in new characters is difficult for me? Idk), but it is what it is LOL.
This weekend I ended up re-watching a couple of films. The first was Rear Window, one of my favorite Hitchcock films. I’m confident I could stare at Grace Kelly for entire days. I love how it’s all filmed, from Jeff’s room, from his cameras, his view, etc. (like that perfect first shot of Lisa when he wakes up with her looking over him, ethereal and mesmerizing -that might just be mine and Jeff’s biases). The lack of a “proper” score works really well for this one too, makes it feel true-to-life in a way I’ve always liked.
The other one was 1978’s Superman; there was a gifset of Superman II going around tumblr and I went all nostalgic I guess :P. Sometimes I feel I forget about Clark because I end up paying a lot more attention to the other Trinity members and their lore LOL. The film itself has aged a bit unevenly, to put it bluntly, but I love Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder’s chemistry, as Clark/Lois and as Superman/Lois; their relationship is overtly sexual in every version worth watching, like here, and it’s one of the best examples of how much you can do with the secret identity trope if you put your heart to it. And it does a good job of showcasing how central Lois is to the Superman lore.
I did watch something new in the weekend too, the latest The Good Place episode. I don’t know what I’ll do when the show is over, I haven’t managed to follow a new show from beginning to end since… idek. So far Legacies is looking like it could be headed that way too, at least. Anyway, under a read more for spoilers.
weekly comics
Jan. 15th, 2020 08:14 pm( Justice League Odyssey #17, Nightwing #68, Teen Titans #38 )
( Avengers #29, Iron Man 2020 #1, Jessica Jones: Blind Spot #1, Marvel's Spider-Man: Black Cat Strikes #1 )
( Wonder Woman: Dead Earth #1 )
