resnullius_bells: Under the Red Hood cover art. Batman stands, and behind him you can see a giant Red Hood helmet, haunting him and watching him. (DC - Bruce & Jason)

Today I got to DC’s last week comics and one more episode from The Vampire Diaries.

-DCeased – The Unkillables #1: I haven’t read the main event so my understanding might be off (there’s a zombie virus? And it can be transmitted via screens?). I wasn’t going to pick this one up because the art for Jason is TERRIBLE (WHAT IS THAT FACE??), but then I saw some panels and decided to read it because it has actually good Jason characterization! What a treat. And it’s only 3 issues long, so.

Anyway, he, Cass, and Gordon are the only batfam members alive in Gotham (Damian and Alfred might be in Metropolis). Jason had found Bruce, Dick and Tim dead on the cave, so he buried them (his “gravestone” for Bruce is miles better than Bruce’s memorial for him xD. “Father, mentor, bastard, Batman.”), and took Ace and the Batmobile to find the survivors (because Batman monitors everyone’s heartbeats, ofc). He finds Joker’s corpse and puts him in the hood of the car, Mad Max style. Love it. And love his little interactions with Cass.

Meanwhile Deathstroke, whose healing factor helps him recover from the virus, teams up with his daughter and a bunch of surviving villains (Mirror Master, Vandal Savage, Captain Cold, Shiva, Bane, Deadshot, Cheeta, Grundy, and the Creeper).

-Justice League #41: the rest of the League fights the Eradicator’s army while Batman is still trapped in Madame Xanadu’s magical tentacles. He then frees himself and gets down on one knee to beg for her help, all knightly; it’s all very kinky and I’m into it. They arrive on time to save the League, but Wonder Woman stays behind and the Eradicator traps her, and makes a show of threatening her and humanity on live tv. I’ll keep reading for Xanadu, Diana’s plot, and to see if I get more John as leader (especially butting heads with Bruce).

-Nightwing #69: I love amnesia as a trope, and the idea of Dick sorting through his memories and trying to find out the truth as a concept, so I might go back and even take inspiration for fics, but at the moment I’ve decided not to follow the story. The dialogue is stilted and cringy, and I’m not interested in the supporting cast. And now the Joker joined the party and I really, really have no patience for that.

-Wonder Woman – Dead Earth #2: this issue gives us a few new reveals. First, the flashbacks tell us that Diana is not only made of clay, but that to give her life, Hippolyta used blood she stole from every god in the Olympus when the Amazons freed themselves. This made Diana disproportionally strong, so Nubia gave her the classic bracelets to contain her, if she so chose. Which she did, saying “I choose submission”. Man, I love how kinky comics are. Especially DC’s.

The other reveal is in present time: turns out the post-Apocalyptic monstrosities hunting humans are actually mutated Amazons, because humans attacked Themyscira with nuclear weapons. Finding out she’s killed some of her fellow sisters shooks Diana to her core, and she ends up abandoning the humans she’d just promised to lead. There will probably be another twist in the two issues left, and one I probably won’t like, but for now I’m enjoying the fact that Diana left with Cheeta on Pegasus’ back. That could give me some shippy feels in issue 3.

-Oh boy. Stefan’s relapse is hitting close to home xD. The highs, the lows, how he’s trying to keep it from Elena, how overhearing Bonnie saying she blames him for Grams’ death making him spiral even more… And I’m interested in how it intersects with his Damon’s issues (which, by the way, his “I’m the good brother” made me think so much of Josie in relation to Lizzie LMAO). I’m curious about how Damon and Elena’s forced detox will work next ep.

-Between that and the Miss Mystic Falls SL, I think this was my favorite episode of the season. Maybe because it reminded me a lot of Caroline’s twins LOL. I loved how Caroline tried to hint that Elena should drop out (because SHE WANTS THIS, and SHE DESERVES THIS. I love her), only to push her back in because then even if she wins it would be worthless anyway. And though I knew she won (it’s the POINT of the Legacies’ episode, that both Josie and Lizzie consider it part of their mom’s legacy), it’s still surprisingly refreshing within TVD’s bound that she got to win.

-Elena’s interview and constant mentions of her mother (and Caroline’s “dead parents equals sympathy vote” comment) reminded me of how Lizzie told Hope to ram up the “orphan card” to win Miss Mystic herself xDD. Carol Lockwood’s expression made me laugh too; I’ve decided between that and her “simply intimacy of the near touch” self-important comment I like her :P

-Bonnie is back! I don’t know how long her more-or-less open resentment to Stefan and Damon will last, but I feel so bad for her and how she obviously feels the need to repress it for Elena’s sake. I liked her moments with Caroline; the way she obviously takes comfort in the simplicity of helping her out with the contest and in her sunny and oblivious-to-the-situation disposition is a nice touch.

-Between how Caroline’s resentment over her relationship with Matt tends to surprise her, and that she didn’t guess why Bonnie was avoiding her, I think Elena has a couple blind spots when it comes to her friends. That makes me wonder how their relationship was before the show; I don’t think she and Bonnie have ever fought before, but maybe Caroline used to try to keep things on the downlow and it’s only now becoming more vocal?

-Good on Jeremy for deciding he’ll keep secrets too if this is how things are gonna be LOL.

Agree, I think 1x19 may well be the strongest episode of the first season. It's just a really good self-contained episode. Stefan's relapse plays out really well and Caroline winning the Miss Mystic Falls crown was great.

I'm interested though... you haven't said much about the love triangle so far and Damon/Elena does get a big moment in this episode. What do you think of Stefan/Elena and Damon/Elena so far?

Yeah, the dance was a Big Moment for Damon/Elena shippers back in the day. It's probably more enjoyable to watch overall if you're neutral on the triangle though, haha.

There's a lot I could say about how Katherine fits into all of this but I will bite my tongue for now!

Caroline/Stefan is GREAT. (I'll say no more.)
