"Mulder was right in the end."
Feb. 20th, 2020 11:23 pmI’m behind in my weekly perusing & judgement of new comics. There’s just too many! At least until I sort them out and decide the few I want to keep up with. The good (?) news is that I find a lot of them extremely annoying -it’s like every. single. issue. must end in a plot-twist/cliffhanger. It becomes tiresome at some point, okay? Anyway, here are my thoughts on last week’s DC stuff.
-I tried to read the Batman: Pennyworth RIP issue but there were so many WRONG things I gave up just a few pages in; I heard it got even worse. Same with Superman: Heroes; I made it further and then gave up when Bruce was bemoaning he didn’t have family or a home like. Bitch what are you talking about??
-Catwoman #20: the minute I pick up this run Selina puts down the purple suit. Just my luck ugh. Anyway. There’s a bunch of new characters, zombies controlled by a villain and created by mixing Lazarus water with a drug, Selina’s sister… the art is super pretty so I think I might pick this up from the beginning and enjoy it.
-Harley Quinn & Poison Ivy #6: I started this one from the end but I think I’ll read the rest when I can, if only because it seems like an interesting fic premise to explore LOL. Apparently it’s revealed that the villain chasing Harley and Ivy is… Ivy. The “real” one, because the one with Harvey (to neither of their knowledges), is only a part, a “cutting”. And Ivy Prime is pissed off and there’s a fight between the two Ivys. Things between Harley and Ivy are left a little unclear.
-Harley Quinn & the Birds of Prey #1: there’s a lot of people I only vaguely remember from past Harley comics. Anyway, most of the comic is Harley telling Power Girl about why she needs to get back to Gotham to get back on her feet, and that Ivy is mad at her and they’re taking a break (there’s a gratuitous tentacle porn vignette there in those flashbacks, because why not). In Gotham the Joker’s put a price on her head so people try to kill her and Helena and Cass rescue her. Renee is with them too, and I assume Dinah won’t be far behind. The story is nothing exciting, but I’m interested in seeing Harley interact with the comics’ versions.
-Supergirl #39: Kara is possessed/infected with something and in a god wannabe kick. Diana tries to stop her and help her with the power of bondage. Do I leave it for a story that leaves me indifferent or just read as long as there’s Diana/Kara interactions (aka the only reason I picked this one)? Hum.
-Superman #20: Clark is still fighting on space, and a rival newspaper debates the ethics of Superman and Clark the journalist being the same person. Lana is there too. Eh. I said I’d like to see the world react to those news, but I’m bored by this comic either way.
-Wonder Woman #751: Diana’s neighbor is a cop tasked to asses if it’s safe for Boston to have her living there. There’s a bunch of new female villains that want to ruin Diana and I’ll probably end up shipping them with them too (plus the cop). And there’s pseudo tentacle porn (it’s technically a giant scorpion’s tail but it does look like a tentacle strangling Diana with the three Dark Fates tag teaming her) on the cover here too; it never fails to surprise me and amuse me how many and how much comic artists and writers seem to love that kink LOL.
And I watched a few more TVD episodes.
-I love Isobel. I love that she went looking for a vampire to get what she wanted. I love how ruthless her measures to keep Elena away were. I love the Mulder comparison. I love when she says “I’m selfish, and obsessed, and a terrible wife… but you love me anyway” to Alaric (who I like here a bit more than I do in Legacies. IDK, I sympathize with his need to KNOW). The fact that I had never heard anything about her when people talk about the show doesn’t bode well for her future, but at least she’s an interesting character. BTW, I’m laughing at the fact that Damon slept with Elena’s mom. This canon likes that awkward area, doesn't it? I mean, it's a given Jade and Josie will have something in Legacies, and Josie's uncle was Jade's fuckbuddy xD (and to make matters worse, Alaric read his thank you note to her about it LOL).
-I like Datherine more and more with each little crumb the story leaves. Like the scene where Katherine goes to kiss Damon with blood on her mouth and he nervously pulls out a handkerchief xDD (and ends up kissing her, blood and all, anyway. And looking up in awe at her vampy face). I laughed out loud when it turned out she was never trapped in the tomb (everything that we know so far about her pointed to that LOL). Poor little Damon, unable to play her hero. If I’m honest, it’s going to be difficult to read his future feelings for Elena as anything but a do-over (to be fair, I feel the same about Stefan’s), with how fixated he is now.
-The whole thing with Grams and Bonnie is so messed up. I’ve said it before (the last time I saw a storyline like this was in Ms. Marvel’s last issues), but it’s pretty common for white characters to get storylines where they do “whatever it takes” to save their families, damn everyone else, and when someone ends up as collateral damages, they get angst and new plots for themselves about their guilt. Characters of color get storylines where they endanger their own families in behalf of a white character, and then they suffer the consequences. Ugh. I liked Grams’ showdown with Damon too, and now I won’t get to see more stuff like that with her. And her sacrifice turned out to be meaningless, because now the vampires are out.
-FUCK YOU MATT DONOVAN. I hate him more and more every single episode. I hate how Caroline has to bend over backwards to keep this asshole from ditching her, how he badmouths her to Tyler, calling her dishonest, and ESPECIALLY how he lets his mother insult her to her face. BTW, what the hell does his mother mean when she says Caroline and Liz are “fake”? I get Caroline can come across that way because she’s “bubbly”, but how does Liz strike anyone as anything other than completely genuine? Anyway, at least Caroline looked cute.
-I’m rooting for Anna and Pearl, but since I never heard about them either I’m not optimistic. I’m looking forward to see what they plan now. And I like that Anna is another Elena-skeptic xD (I like Elena a lot, but it’s nice to see people immune to her charm). And she and Jeremy are cute; now that he at least suspects she’s a vampire, things could get interesting.
-Speaking of Elena’s charms, I loved when she takes of her necklace to convince Damon to trust her. This girl’s motto is “big risks, bigger rewards”. The scene get’s ruined with Damon’s bullshit “I wanted it to be real”, however; between the Caroline rape plot, how he acted at the auction, and how he (in his own words) “exploits college girls” to get over his heartbreak, the show couldn’t be hammering home more how “superior” Elena is to other girls. I do kind of like his dynamic with Liz, much to my chagrin, but he better not hurt her in any way ¬¬

Date: 2020-02-20 11:40 pm (UTC)Damon/Katherine is A+, I'm glad you approve. Also Damon and Stefan both have massive transference issues when it comes to Elena, I think that's pretty obvious early on, haha.
The storyline with Bonnie is unfortunately typical, yeah. Matt as always is the worst.

Date: 2020-02-21 12:58 am (UTC)Datherine is the good stuff. And yeah, the transference issues are a big part of Elena's relationship with the brothers. And ith Stefan there's the question about how genuine what he felt for Katherine was, but Damon was all in, fangs and all xD
Yeah, no surprises with Bonnie's story so far, TBH.
Matt is such a jerk ugh. A very typical, unoriginal, and true-to-life one, which in this show somehow makes it worse. And he clearly thinks so highly of himself, on top of it all. Ugh.
