I'm in a shippy mood, so I grabbed this ask meme I found on tumblr:

  1. Name a ship that feels like home.
  2. Name a ship that you love but have conflicted feelings over.
  3. Name a ship that you love to share with others.
  4. Name a ship that you love but struggle to understand.
  5. Name a ship that is different from all other ships.
  6. Name a ship that most represents your type of ship.
  7. Name a ship that reminds you of a personal relationship.
  8. Name a ship that is just yours.
  9. Name a ship that is perfect just the way it is.
  10. Name a ship that is funny.
  11. Name a ship that is sweet.
  12. Name a ship that is tragic.
  13. Name a ship that is slow burn.
  14. Name a ship that is timeless.
  15. Name a ship that is gender bending.
  16. Name a ship in which you love all characters equally.
  17. Name a ship in which you love one character above all others.
  18. Name the ship with the loveliest fanfiction.
  19. Name the ship with the loveliest fans.
  20. Name the best song that accompanies a ship.
  21. Name your favorite ship from a book.
  22. Name your favorite ship from a movie.
  23. Name your favorite ship from a show.
  24. Name your favorite moment ever from a ship.
  25. Name the moment in which you love [insert ship] the most.
  26. Name the moment in which you understand [insert ship] the most.
  27. Name the biggest change you would make to [insert ship].
  28. Name the sweetest moment from [insert ship].
  29. Name the most stylish moment from [insert ship].
  30. Name the most awkward moment from [insert ship].

If you want to ask for a specific ship (or fandom or character), I list a few of them in my sticky post; my tags are another good place to start (reminder to myself to organize those a little better...). If my reply gets long enough, I might have to answer in a new post. I feel like I commit to too many memes LOL (this, the TVD meme I still mean to finish before getting on with s2, the fave character meme I want to make after Legacies' season is over... *sighs*).

And before I forget, there's a spring friending meme started by @tozka here, in case anyone's interested ^^

resnullius_bells: Jadzia with a shocked yet amused impression. (Star Trek - Jadzia Dax)

Happy Ides! I was an Ancient Rome nerd as a child (and a little bit now, if I’m honest) and this is one of my favorite anniversaries xP

I ended up re-watching Xena’s eponymous episode about it. It’s one of my favorite ones: it has the Ides of March, a lot of Gabrielle/Xena feels, Callisto… and I love how little the show cares about anything even remotely resembling historical accuracy LOL.

I’m continuing my Star Trek re-watch, very, veeeery slowly. The other day I watched “Charlie X”; the scene in the rec-room is one of my favorite ones in the series, with Spock mingling with the crew and playing a song for Uhura to sing <3 (her very cheeky songs lol). It’s also one of those that includes Spock + Kirk chess scenes (that Kirk wins), which are one of those pieces of meta-writing I always enjoy.

And in between reading stuff to for my classes today I started re-reading Carmilla. I love that book so, so much <3. I want to re-read Dracula next (I’m in a vampire mood, I guess), but maybe I should, IDK. Try something new, for a change xD. Maybe I’ll order Gideon the Ninth, everyone keeps recommending it to me.

My current WIPs are slow going and I wanted to write something short during these days, since I can’t leave the home and don’t have much else to do but read, watch tv, and write. So, I'm taking prompts: post a comment with a pairing or character and make me choose between two settings, two tropes, two lines, etc.; or, if you’re not coming up with specific prompts, I will put my music player on shuffle and write a ficlet based on the first song that comes up.

Here's a link to a list of my fandoms & ships & some of my preferences, if you’re looking for inspiration. I also wanted to borrow this meme from @author_by_night, where I choose between popular tropes and tell you why; it might give you even more ideas.

I saw this ask game(s) over tumblr and I couldn’t resist it, so please ask away! I mention some of my favorite fandoms, ships, and characters here, but a basic rundown of my main ones: DC, fairy tales and mythology in general (from originals to Disney adaptations, etc.), GOT, HP, His Dark Materials, Legacies (and now TVD, but keep in mind I’ve only watched half a season so far), Marvel, Rick & Morty, and Terminator.

I borrowed this meme from @kingstoken ^^

  • Which TV shows did you start watching in 2019?

My roommate got me to watch Hazbin Hotel and Rick and Morty with her (two of the most reviled fandoms on tumblr, I’ve learned xD. I get why, but they’re really good shows -and HH only has a pilot out so far), and I got into His Dark Materials and Legacies. I didn’t really start anything else new, which is my default (I’ve already started THREE new shows in 2020 and that’s a rarity LOL).

  • Which TV shows did you let go of in 2019?

I guess Game of Thrones? I mean, I didn’t let it go as much as it just… ended on its own LOL, but there weren’t any other show that would fit here.

  • Which TV show impressed you least in 2019?

I’d have to say His Dark Materials; I loved a LOT of what it did, and I definitely enjoyed it and plan to continue it, but I was underwhelmed by a lot of the adaptation changes, especially regarding the defanging of both Lyra and Mrs. Coulter.

  • Which TV show do you think you might let go of in 2020 unless things significantly improve?

Well, I guess I grow less and less attached to MCU stuff. I could still watch some films if I hear they’re really good or have subplots that seem up my alley (and I’ll watch GOTG3 for Nebula; maybe Captain Marvel 2 if it gives me some Yonvers or brings back Rhodey), but I’ve been a Tony gal since before the films started soooo xD

  • Your main fandom of the year?

Legacies, I think. Most of my unpublished WIPs are in that fandom and I add new ideas to the pile with every new episode ¬¬. I’m very enamored with it (so much that I’ve taken to the task of watching its parent shows LOL. Of which I’m also getting fic ideas because I lack any semblance of restraint).

And now some The Vampire Daries thoughts:

TVD 1x07-1x09 )
resnullius_bells: Black silhouette holding a knife, in black and white, as seen from inside the shower in the film Psycho. (Stock - Horror)
(finally caught up with the challenge!)

I didn't create this, I borrowed it from tumblr. But they looked interesting. First, I though I'd try one with writing prompts, because I short of got stuck on a few fics, and maybe this will nudge me into one or other direction during this week(end). I updated my sticky post with a list of ships I'd like to write about at the moment (and favorite tropes underneath). I'll warn you, I can't write happy fluff or humor to save my life; it's all angst and dark humor and horror and taboos in this house. It's all a question of whether it'll be framed as a gothic horror novel or a trashy romance one LOL.

Send me an ask with a pairing and make me choose between

-two settings

-two AU verses

-two lines of dialogue

-two emotions

-two anything really

and I’ll write a drabble of ficlet about one of those things

Or if you don't want to send a prompt, here's an ask meme borrowed from @wheatear. Granted some of these I won't be able to answer, as I haven't published anything yet LOL, but it sounds fun. Under the cut because it's long.

Feel free to borrow them and pass them around!

ETA: I still accept icon requests here.
resnullius_bells: Carolyn Jones' Morticia, in color, looking at the camera as she holds a cup of tea. (Default)
Well, since my roommate had an important job presentation today, I made sure she had food ready when she came home. That totally counts.

In addition, I've gone through the wishlist for challenge #6, and see what I could offer myself (mostly I've recommended fics, books, communities, etc.).

And at last, something that combines with challenge #13: create a fanwork. I'm offering to make icons for anyone who asks (you can see the ones I've made linked in this post, if you want). You can be as specific as you want, even pass me a link to the image, or just give me a general idea (if it's from a fandom I don't know, I might need more details). I noticed a lot of people asked for icons in their wishlists, though mostly from fandoms I don't know, so this is your chance to get them ^^

I thought of offereing ficlets too but I think I'm gonna leave that for challenge #15, after I make a more comprehensive list of what fandoms and ships I'm willing to write. I have a rare free-ish week and I'm going to take advantage of it, dammit.

AKA talk about someone who inspired you and recommend a fannish or creative resource.

For some reason, number 10 is the hardest one yet. You know that thing, where someone asks you a very specific question about your interests and suddenly you forget everything you’ve ever liked and every one of your opinions? It’s a little bit like that, at least for me LOL.

It’s not like I haven’t been inspired by people in fandom (though I’m admittedly terrible when it comes to following authors, and just jump through fandom to fandom without consistency), or original creators like Mary Shelley, Hitchcock, Emma Orzcy or William Marston, or other personalities like Nina Simone, Amelia Earheart or Lucille Ball. But for some reason my mind won’t cooperate when it comes to raving about them at length right now xD

I’ll say when it comes to inspiration to my own writing, what works best for me is visuals: paintings, fanart, aesthetic posts, etc. It’s basically the main reason I have tumblr, where I get a lot of ideas from my art, fanart and inspo tags. Fanartist are the best thing to happen to my creativity, NGL.

As for fannish and creative resources:

  • There are tons of blogs in tumblr that offer solid writing advice and links to resources. Some of my favorites are scriptshrink (with a lot of information about writing about mental illnesses), ao3commentoftheday (lots of good fandom advice and debates), monsterkinkmeme (prompts for monster lovers), or clevergirlhelps, for just about anything. Writeroftheprompts offers both prompts and advice, and has a handy masterlist here.
  • This site has space terminology provided by NASA for your sci-fi writing needs.
  • Writingexercises is one of my favorite ones. It’ll generate prompts, character traits, titles… Great for writer’s block, in my experience.
  • Bad Things Happen Bingo opens for new cards again on February 3rd and it's a pretty chill event, without deadlines, perfect if you're into heavy angst, whump, darkfic in general, etc.
resnullius_bells: The twins lying in bed together, while a devoted Josie puts ice on Lizzie's wound. (Legacies - Josie & Lizzie)

This is a great opportunity to make the Legacies rec post this blog needed.

First, and most importantly: the show is FUN. It has endless charm and I haven’t been bored in a single episode, even ones where my favorite characters were away. And though it IS an spin-off of an spin-off, I’ve watched neither of those and can follow it pretty well (I plan on watching the previous shows at some point because I’m sure they’ll enhance the experience, but my point is, you don’t need to).

The story is set in a boarding school for supernatural kids; witches, werewolves and young vampires, for the most part, with a few rarities thrown in. It follows a monster of the week structure (or more accurately, creature of the week; “monster” doesn’t really fit some of them) that I hadn’t realized I missed until I stumbled into this show. Its Harry Potter and Buffy the Vampire Slayer homages are shameless and I love it for it.

There are characters, ships and dynamics for everyone. I happen to fall in the non-canon and/or problematic camp, but that’s just me LOL.

The lead character, Hope Mikaelson, is an orphan and the descendant of powerful supernatural lines, and somehow a witch/werewolf/almost vampire hybrid. She’s closed off and prone to anger, pretty badass and a marshmallow on the inside.

My favorite characters are the twins, Josie and Lizzie (points to icon. Lizzie is the blonde one, Josie the brunette one). They’re the human Headmaster’s daughters (I don’t know if “somehow even more of a questionable Headmaster than Dumbledore but nowhere near as brilliant” is a selling point here, but it makes for interesting plots LOL). They’re witches, but instead of having their own magic, they can only use it if they absorb it from their surroundings. Their biological (dead) mother was a witch, and there are dark secrets in her former coven that will haunt the twins. Their co-dependent dynamic is everything to me. And Lizzie's actress is a comedic genius, I swear.

My other favorite is another witch (witches FTW) that’s just been added to the show, Alyssa Chang, as the Mean Girl. I liked yet another Mean Witch, Penelope -Josie’s ex-, but it looks like the actress has left the show for good. Other characters you’ll find are Rafael, a recently turned werewolf (the werewolf mythos in the show is pretty interesting, BTW), and Landon, his foster brother with a mysterious backstory; Dorian, a badass human teacher; or Kaleb and MG, two teen vampires that take very different approaches to their status as such.

The show is the most fun I’ve had with a new fandom in years, and it has plenty of lovable characters to pick from, and interesting relationships all around. Its antagonists and creatures of the week are often hilarious -a few episodes ago there was a Santa vs. Krampus fist fight. It was awesome-, or reveal interesting sides from our main characters. It’s only a season and a half long at the moment (26 episodes total), the first one available in USA Netflix, and it’s already been renewed for a third season, so you don’t need to be concerned about a possible cancellation.

I don’t really like to put the focus on representation when it comes to recommending fiction, and though it’s not perfect by any means (the racial dynamics have some issues, although from what I’ve heard, not nearly as much as the parent shows), the show does interesting things when it comes to mental illness (Lizzie is canonically bipolar, and it’s a topic treated with immensurable sympathy by the writing), and it acts on the assumption that any of the teens could be queer and it’s no big deal (Hope was recently confirmed as having at least once crushed on a girl).

I would love to find people to talk with about this show, so I’d ask that you guys give it a try! You'll get a The Wish homage episode that made my year, powerful teen witches wreaking havoc, supernatural creatures harder to find in genre fiction, great family and friendship dynamics, hilarious villains, and did I mention the Santa vs. Krampus fight? That sure was something.

AKA rec yourself and rec at least three fanworks you didn't create.

I wanted to post at least one fic before I got to this challenge LOL, but my WIPs are not collaborating with me right now, and I'd like to catch up with the challenge, thank you very much (I have a rare free day, so I'm going to try to do as many of these as possible. Sorry in advance for spamming your reading pages).

Since it wasn't possible, I'll link to a couple of posts I posted in @monthlysupergo for this month's challenge: icons. In my case, Wonder Woman icons (misc, and from this week's anthology issue). I made my dreamwidth icons too, and I'm quite proud of them -visual arts of any kind are NOT my thing, but these all turned pretty well, if I say so myself. And since I have so very little output in terms of fanworks, here are the icons or headers I use in other platforms too :)

As for other people's fanworks: one of my favorite things in fandom, one that never fails to impress me, is fanart. Maybe it's because I struggle to draw a straight line with a ruler, I don't know. But there are so many gorgeous pieces out there, and at least 70% of why I made myself a tumblr account was to reblog them and have them stored somewhere. Some of my favorite ones:

And to finsih it off, I wanted to rec two fics I read recently (and finally commented on): O Rose thou art sick, an Aurora/Maleficent what-if for the Disney film (mind the warnings); and itches in the front, a short BatCat smut fic with some domme Selina.
resnullius_bells: Lynda Carter as Diana Prince, wearing her glasses and a US Navy uniform and hat. (DC - Diana Prince)
I did number 5 a few days ago(comenting and introducing myself to new people. Though since I'm new here, I guess I'd done that since I started). So here's my wishlist!

  • I said this already, but I would love to get book recs. I love gothic novels and trashy romance novels more than anything. Horror, fantasy, historical fiction and sci-fi are my favourite genres (contemporary and "grounded" mundane stories are very much not my thing). Preferably with female protagonists and ideally with wlw romances. And I tend to steer clear of YA -the narration's style irks me.

  • I love fanart. Pretty art in general. I have trouble drawing a straight line with a ruler, so I'm mesmerized by the artistic talent out there. I would love it if anyone ever gave me a drawing as a gift; if they drew something for one of the fics that I hope to soon start publishing, I might even faint.

  • LBR, I'd love any kind of fanwork as a gift.

  • Wonder Woman related stuff. Recs, fanworks, links to cute merch, anything. On that vein, if someone wrote/drew/etc. Diana/Poison Ivy for me, I'd give them my firstborn.

  • Meeting one other person that watches Legacies (and is into Josie/Lizzie, but I know that's a hard one xDD).

resnullius_bells: Under the Red Hood cover art. Batman stands, and behind him you can see a giant Red Hood helmet, haunting him and watching him. (DC - Bruce & Jason)

AKA, recommending my favorite communities, fest and challenges + setting some goals for the upcoming year. I decided to do it this way because my short-term fandom goals align with those challenges.

resnullius_bells: Black and white picture of the Black Family Crest. It includes three crows, a skull, a hand with a dagger over a starry night, and their emblem "toujours pur". (HP - Black Family Crest)

My fannish history has been that of a lurker until recently.

I discovered fandom pretty early, when I was around 10 years old. Back then I read tons of BTVS and Harry Potter darkfics in fanfiction dot net, mostly centered around femslash and slash couples (and tried not to think too much about what that meant lol). I was terrified at the idea that my parents found out what I liked to read, let around write -I used all the tricks possible to hide my notebooks, since I was too paranoid about using the house's computer. For the same reason, I only read fic in the local library's outdated computers, I never made an account and always commented annonymously.

With time the list of fandoms I read expanded -DC, Marvel, Star Trek...-, but by necessity I stayed a lurker for a long, long time. Then things got difficult during college, and I mostly withdrew from fandom, and writing in general, altogether.

I always used writing as catharsis, more than anything (which was another reason why I couldn't let anyone see what I wrote -it got heavy at times), and a few of my new fandoms (Legacies and His Dark Materials, mostly) and old ones (what with the MCU sort-of ending, and DC and Star Trek trying to lure me back in), I started itching more and more to write again. Around last month I got back some inspiration, and away from home and with my own computer, I ended up making a tumblr and ao3 accounts. I mostly reblog pretty gifs and fanart along with meta and political posts in the first, and I have yet to post anything in the second. But soon!

And that's my very short fandom history.

Get out your iPod phone and prepare to be amazed by the power of music to predict what you will, or should, do in the new year. Shuffle your playlist and set your controls for random play. Let it play a new, randomly selected song for each question and write down the title as your answer. Don't pick and choose — take the first song it gives you.
