catching up

-Batman: The Adventures Continue #1: this one is a new run taking place in the Timmverse/Batman: the Animated Series continuity (though I don’t know to which point; Batman Beyond being set in the future can mess with that). The story itself isn’t anything to write home about (yet), and lacks the ~soul of the old stuff IMO, but I’m curious about how they’ll adapt Jason (as Red Hood) into it, given how they borrowed huge parts of his history and personality for this canon’s Tim ¬¬. I might end up disappointed, but if Jason appears on it, I have to read it, them’s the rules (another reason while I’ll have to check out Titans eventually… but probably not until it’s over and I know what to expect).
-Wonder Woman #754: Diana helps Maxima, a lesbian space princess, to regain her throne while being ~true to herself and marrying her girlfriend instead of a man. Meanwhile Donna is dealing with her recent possession/whatever was recently going on with DC’s heroes being turned evil, and with the fact that the Amazons gave her fake memories to cover the fact that she’d been created to destroy them and give her a “normal life”. And Warmaster & Co continue bringing more of Diana’s enemies to their cause.
-2020 Force Works #2: Rhodey is captured by some Deathlocks that want to make him one of them. The team fights them (and Ultimo, aka giant alien) to rescue him, though in the end he rescues them. MODOK was the one who saved him from becoming a cyborg and now he wants to be part of the team. Eh. At least this one isn’t trying to convince me it’s writing something deep about artificial intelligence, and I like most of the team.
-Jessica Jones: Blind Spot #6: why does every Marvel writer lately insists on writing Jen’s dialogue… like that? Like she has exactly two brain cells? I hate it so damn much. I really should get to reading some of her She-Hulk comics, where she gets to be a badass lawyer and all. Anyway. Jessica and Luke are having a domestic day while trying to plan for Dani’s birthday, but ofc it gets constantly interrupted by heroes and villains alike. Jessica has a bad time because all the decorations Luke bought were purple. Though it gets worse at the very end when the babysitter brings Dani back and she’s turned purple. IDEK anymore. I’d prefer if this run had ended with the last issue. Now I don’t even want to write Jessica and Luke roleplaying while Jess wears Carol’s old costume anymore lol.
-Star #3: turns out last issue’s Wanda & Ripley adventure was mostly the latter hallucinating/altering reality with her powers. Okay. Carol finally appears and provides the short-sighted hot head to Wanda’s voice of reason. Ripley has flashbacks to her origin story, where she tried to interview Carol and became involved in an attack. I’m not well-versed with that arc but NGL, I kind of sympathize with her resentment. Black Swan appears but lets Ripley go, and runs away just when Carol arrives, just before a big showdown between her and Ripley (who is terrified of her and so wants to kill her).
-Tarot #4: the art is very pretty, though the story makes little to no sense (at least it owns it?). Some magic tarot cards with the heroes drawn on it got mixed and in a couple of children’s hands, and reality started crumbling. Tony/Gadget/that new combo convinced the kids to give the cards to him for one of his inventions, who could do holograms, and saved the day. I’m pretty sure there was a drunk Tony joke later which. Not a big fan of that, tbh.
It seems I’ll have to wait around a month, or more, to read some of the comics I’d been looking forward to… oh well.
The fact that this will be the last episode we’ll see in a while kind of… lets the season hanging? It wasn’t as solid as the first one, but it still feels weird.
I liked that we got into Josie’s subconscious, even if some of the parts there were poorly acted IMO. But I liked the fairy tale scenario, and its origin (that quote about how Caroline read them fairy tales and Josie found comfort in them because “there were bad guys and good guys, and very clear rules you had to follow. It all made sense”), Josie addressing her fears of hurting Lizzie or becoming Kai, and the reproaches dark!Josie expressed, which really got to the heart of her character (how she feels ignored by her parents because of Lizzie pulling all the attention, how heartbroken she feels about Penelope refusing to fight for her anymore or about Landon dumping her like it’s nothing, or how terrified she is that she’s doomed to lose the Merge). I think it’ll be interesting to see where she goes from here, especially now that she’s temporarily given up her powers.
Lizzie’s storyline was both hilarious and heartbreaking. I love how into her own funeral she got LMAO. Girl wanted to do her own eulogy! All while wearing Hope’s body LOL (and doing it better than her, TBH). Her classmates are assholes incapable of appreciating just how great she is, though. MG’s speech was touching (I like that she was the one to give him that name; I’ve always loved the relation between names and personhood and it’s interesting), but I really don’t want them to get together romantically :/. Anyway, though I enjoyed the storyline overall, I wish we’ve gotten more actual Josie & Lizzie interaction. I missed that.
I also ADORED her line at the beginning, when she transformed into Hope: “I’m unique and special, and for some reason, I’m really emo about it!” yes baby, drag her!! I like Hope more than most of the characters of her kind, but that kind of protagonist mentality always annoys me xD
And Alyssa is fine and alive again! I hope she gets a bigger part going forward, because after the twins, she’s my fave by far.
What with the forced isolation, between online classes and online work, my roommate and I are watching tons and tons of tv. I’ve tried reading to but I can’t focus for long enough at the moment, which sucks -so there it is Carmilla’s novella, likely the shortest among my favorite stories, waiting for me to finish my re-read xD.
Usually tv shows are what I’m unable to properly get into: I can’t follow week-by-week episodes unless I’m really into it, and I don’t have as much time to binge-watch as I used to; and when I do, I don’t feel capable of investing in new characters and usually just end up re-watching old faves. Or at best, watching adaptations/spin offs, where I’m at least partially invested (i.e. I started The Vampire Diaries because I was already in love with Legacies; I watched the Harley Quinn animated show because, well).
On that vein, we finally got around watching the fourth, and likely last, season of Veronica Mars.
Unpopular opinion probably, but I liked it xD. I’m interested in Veronica and Keith, and though I like other characters, especially Wallace or Weevil, I can ultimately take them or leave them (with the possible exception of Lilly. I loooove Lilly), so I liked how much the season focused on them and that we got to see them properly team up literally every episode. I got teary eyed and everything with Keith’s storyline, too. And I enjoyed some of the new characters, especially Matty, but also Simone and Clyde. Meanwhile, I never warmed up to Logan; I think he’s an interesting character and a good romantic foil for Veronica, but I can’t say I’m heartbroken about his death, which obviously, makes a difference in my reaction to the ending.
We also watched Watchmen, yet another story I’m familiar with xD. I thought Angela was a superb protagonist, and I enjoyed all the ingenious storytelling devices they used during the season. My other favorites were Lady Trieu, Will, Wade, and of course, good ol’ Laurie; I really liked what they did with her here. I liked Cal, too -his matter-of-fact speech to the kids about how there’s no afterlife and death is final endeared me to the guy xD
We even watched a completely new thing! She’s wanted to watch Prodigal Son for a while; I’m not one for procedurals but this one sounded interesting enough, so I indulged her. The procedural part is alright enough, but I’m mostly interested in the Whitly family’s drama. My favorites are Jessica and Martin, both of whom are a DELIGHT, but I love Ainsley and Malcolm too. There was a post on tumblr recently about how great it is that the romances the show focuses on most are all about Jessica, the mother character/middle aged woman, and I can’t agree more. And
I NEED Sophie aka The Girl in the Box to be alive and appear again; upon discovering she’d been kidnapped by a serial killer she negotiated her freedom with him and got it (and it was no “love of a good woman” type of thing. It’s just believable that Martin would free her in exchange for good info because he’s that kind of wild card). I want to properly meet her, and I want to see her get scenes with the rest of the Whitly family.
Next show in line is probably Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries. Which I guess technically counts as a procedural, but one a lot prettier and more stylish than the average, at least xD (procedurals are usually so drab…). I have high hopes for this one, so I hope I like it ^^

Date: 2020-04-02 05:02 pm (UTC)I must get around to watching Veronica Mars s4 at some point. The reaction I've seen on tumblr to it was really negative, but then tumblr does tend to be that way.

Date: 2020-04-02 07:47 pm (UTC)Yeah, tumblr hated the season. I wasn't discouraged by that, because the fandom also loved the film and... I so did not LOL. To each their own.
There were things about it I didn't like (Wallace barely gets anything to do -at least with Mac there's the excuse about the actress not appearing at all-, and Weevil's plot is disheartening, to say the least). And I'd warn that it's even worse about racial dynamics than the old show, IMO. But I loved Veronica's and Keith's parts enough that, for me, it more than made up for anything I disliked.

I've always thought that the show has struggled with decent plots for some of the supporting characters so I'm not surprised that that hasn't changed.

Date: 2020-04-05 11:59 am (UTC)Yeessss. It was good information, but also, he's just crazy enough to be like, "sure this girl saw my face and knows I'm a serial killer, but what the hell." He IS total wild card.

Date: 2020-04-06 04:07 am (UTC)Not weird at all, in regards to fictional serial killers. There's a line in the Hannibal TV show: "Saving lives is just as arousing as ending them. He likes to play God." I think it's the same with Martin. It's all about control. It's whatever HE decides will happen.

One of the top careers for psychopaths!
