Yeah, in order to make sense of it you have to either think Elena is stupid (which she clearly isn't; maybe she's not booksmart, but certainly not stupid either), or that she didn't consider it a priority, not enough to care about their safety -or maybe that after taking Jeremy's memories she subconsciously saw the benefits of being able to ask Damon to repeat the trick.
She's really good at handling (most) people -some are particularly resistant to her, like Caroline or Vicky, and I think Stefan can play that game too-, and I think it's because she's a typical case of "believe what you're selling" LOL. If she ever became self-aware IDK how well she could sustain that, but lucky for Elena people like her are really good at fooling themselves.

Caroline/Elena is shaping up to be my favorite relationship by far. I really want to see how Caroline's vampirism (and later, Elena's) influences it.
